Remembering Mowglis brother Daniel Dennett
March 28, 1942 - April 19, 2024

YouTube Memorial Broadcast

Original Podcast: 1/30/21

If you happened to read the obituary notice about Mowglis brother Daniel Dennett in the 2024 "Mowglis Call," you will have a pretty good synopsis of some of his most profound professional achievements.

Indeed, Dan Dennett moved a lot of mountains in his professional life. . . but few admirers of the man who will be enshrined in the hall of great philosophers will know about the life experiences that formed the very foundation of Daniel Dennett's character and outlook on life.

That is why I recently took the time to track down the video of Dan's last conversation with me for the Mowglis Memories podcast, which has previously only been "published" as an audio podcast, to provide a video record of the conversation, not only for members of the Mowglis family but for the wider world.

You see, the roots of the integrity, honor and gentle (but firm) spirit that Daniel Dennett brought to his intellectual pursuits in adulthood can be found in the life lessons he learned at Camp Mowglis - The School of the Open, on Newfound Lake in New Hampshire. Anyone who wants to fully understand how it was that Daniel Dennett developed into the intellectual giant the world knew needs to understand what happened to Dan between 1951, when he first came to Mowglis, until 1959 - his last summer, and well beyond his summer experiences as core values that drove him throughout his life.

Books by Dan Dennett

I recommend you read Dan's final memoir: "I've Been Thinking" first to get a fuller picture of his extraordinary life.

Some folks would say that Mowglis is in the DNA of the Popinchalk family.

Mark Popinchalk came to Mowglis as a member of the staff in 2011 and while also working his way through a degree in astrophysics, he returned for two additional summers.

Growing up as a boy of the world, living in many different countries where his dad, Michael - also a former member of the Mowglis staff - was teaching and serving as administrator in numerous American schools throughout the world.

Today, Mark Popinchalk is not just a Mowglis Man of the world, he is a Mowglis man of the Universe from his perch at New York's famed Hayden Planetarium.

Whether it's introducing elementary school children to the wonders of the universe or sharing the secrets of Mar's moons on TikTok, or reveling in the fun April fools "papers" that some of his colleagues create for April 1 publication, Mark points to his Mowglis experience as the source of his love for teaching.

Check out his very cool summaries of new astronomic papers called Astrobites!

The job of Director at Camp Mowglis is never easy. It takes a special person to assure the safety and happiness of more than 100 campers and staff for the entire summer.

Ten years ago, after an 18 month national search Mowglis struck gold when it hired Nick Robbins and got, as a bonus, his amazing wife and partner Diana.

Nick Robbins has been at the helm at Mowglis now for a decade and what a decade it has been! When Nick began his tenure Mowglis had fewer than half the campers considered to constitute a full camp, today Mowglis is looking full and robust heading into the 2024 summer.

In this episode, Nick shares the road that led him to Mowglis and the journey since then that has led Mowglis back to its rightful place as one of the premier summer camps in the US.
