EP 88: Den of 1982 - A Zoom Reunion

 Den 1982: A Group Reunion

This summer, the graduates of 1982 and a few Mowglis men who were with them along the way, met for the 40th reunion of their Den year. Arthur Sculco suggested a Zoom reunion as well, so here they are. . . So, this Mowglis memories podcast is - by necessity - a YouTube event. Otherwise, we would never be able to distinguish which of the many folks were talking at any one time. So it's an experiment of sorts, but perhaps worth trying again. Thanks to Bruce Fergusen for the "new" recordings of the Graduate's Hymn, The Candlelight Hymn, and the Mowglis Rowing song
. https://youtu.be/d2LXq21FxY4 I'm thinking this method of presenting a podcast would be good for commemorating specific events and special people we have lost over the years. If you have an idea, let me know and we'll try to make it happen.

84 Clarke Wallace Den 1982 Looking Back After 40 Years

His seemingly perpetual youth notwithstanding, Clarke Wallace - Clarkie as his fellow Mowglis called him - still fits his nickname. He came to Mowglis in 1979 and graduated with the Den of 1982. His family roots, however, go back to his uncle Byrd Davenport, the impetus for coming to Mowglis back in the 70s. Clarke says that he wasn't sure whether he had ever been out of Virginia even when he ventured off to Mowglis but his summer ended with Clarke saying he did not want to leave!

EP 82 Gaius Merwin III: How the Biggest & Strongest Camper and Counselor of Mowglis became a Little Buttercup

Gaius Merwin III

Gaius Merwin III: How the Biggest Camper and Counselor of Mowglis became a Little Buttercup

Emblazoned into the memory of every Mowglis, who were contemporaries, are a few images: Jeff O'Rourke or Eric Love as Bubbles, wife of Zep the lead Zamboni Brother and Gaius Merwin as Little Buttercup in a Jerry Hakes production! The mystery of Little Buttercup is finally solved as Gaius Merwin comes clean about just how he was talked into dressing in a beautiful yellow dress and singing "I'm a little buttercup" before a packed Grey Brothers hall on a Saturday night.

Gaius forms one part of the third Generation of Merwins - in addition to cousins Russ and Mike - to play his part in the Mowglis pageant. Younger Mowglis of course will know his son Jason, who we'll soon be interviewing for the Mowglis Memories Podcast. Gaius was Tripmaster in 1969 for an iconic Mount Washington Squad that included Charlie Walbridge as his fellow staff member and Bob Bengtson, Stu Carothers, Ed Mitchell, Dave Scott, John Woods, John Chisholm, Jim "Iggy" Westberg and Wayne King.

Episode 75 Pablo Lloyd: Three Summers in Baloo?

Pablo Lloyd

Three Summers in Baloo?

Pablo Lloyd came to Mowglis in 2013 along with his brother Alexander. In the summer of 2021 and 2022 he returned as a member of the Mowglis staff, following in the footsteps of his dad Tom who came to Mowglis as a young camper and then returned to become a member of the staff. Pablo obviously cherishes the memories of his year as a camper but his years on the staff have really made it all come together for him.
