 Jonathan Feuer - True North on the Mowglis Compass

Jonathan Feuer came to Mowglis in 1958 - the result of a bit of serendipity when his mother learned about Mowglis from her perch on a dentist's chair. Pregnant at the time with another Mowglis icon brother Charles, Jonathan's mom decided that it might be the right time for Jonathan and his brother Robert to spend part of their summer at camp.

As a young camper, Jonathan experienced the transition from Mowglis under the private ownership of John Adams to the inspired leadership of William B. Hart Sr. and the Holt Elwell Memorial Foundation, a foundation that he himself would one day come to lead. . . though he affectionately blames Bill Hart Jr. for roping him into the job.

Jonathan digs deep in his memory bank in this conversation; reflecting on the profound impact that a young Charlie Walbridge had on his life, likewise the impact of crew coach and future HEMF President Bill Hart Jr. He speaks of his admiration for Wes Pullen, Steve Underwood, Stuart Klein just to name a few and laughs at Bill Hart's challenge to balance the crewboat - both in terms of weight and power - with a young, huge and powerful Gaius Merwin.

He speaks humorously and gratefully of his moment - in the doghouse - on "Mr. Hart's porch" and the lifelong impact it had on him.

With three racing crew stripes on his Mowglis hat, Jon is among a very elite group of Mowglis campers. He is pictured above with his Mowglis hat, its ribbons and stripes sewn lovingly by Irene Gibbs during quiet moments in the Jungle House.

There are few Mowglis to whom we all owe such a debt of gratitude but, of course, Jonathan is quick to say that - on balance - the debt he owes to Mowglis could never be fully repaid.

Dr. Tomoharu Nishino, “Tomo” to most of us, is the epitome of quiet competence. He’s always been that way even as a cub, even when he was playing “Hello Dolly” along with Ian Brown on the trumpet and Abe Unger on the guitar! (He’s also obviously a good sport - who doesn’t take himself too seriously!)

Since the position of Akela is already occupied by Mowglis Director Nick Robbins it is difficult to place Tomo in a specific role, vis a vis the Jungle Book, but perhaps it is the role of wise old Baloo who zealously guards the pack from his position as wise and respected teacher. 

For a man of such accomplishments: Cox of the winning blue racing crew, member of the Mount Washington Squad, and now President of the HEMF Board of Trustees, Tomo is a modest and quiet leader to whom we all look for his wise leadership.

In this podcast Tomo marvels at the amazing staff who occupied the Mowglis firmament in his camper days, including Mr. Hart and , while acknowledging the amazing Mowglis campus and the great traditions, especially attributes the Mowglis Spirit to the men and women who - over the years - have given so much to make Mowglis, Mowglis.

Dr. Tomoharu Nishino currently serves as the Co-Director of the International Relations Program at the University of Pennsylvania. He has previously taught in the International Relations Program from 2004 to 2008, and served as the Acting Associate Director of the program in 2007-2008. He also taught at the Penn-in-Seoul program during the summer of 2008.  Prior to arriving at Penn, he taught in the Government Department at the University of Texas at Austin from 2000 to 2004.  His area of expertise includes international political economy, the political economy of international security, political economy of energy, game theory, and quantitative data analysis.

Dr. Nishino is also an active consultant specializing in entrepreneurship education and venture incubation programs.  He is a partner with the firm Inspiration Labs which serves as both a incubator and strategy consultancy to early stage ventures, as well as advises educational institutions on the creation and implementation of entrepreneurship programs.  Previously, Dr. Nishino was a partner in the firm Twain Associates, which specialized in strategy and market entry, advising American Fortune 500 companies with extensive operations in the far east, and Japanese and Korean firms seeking to enter or expand in the North American market. 

A native of Japan, Dr. Nishino came to the United States to pursue his education.  He earned his B.S. in Government from Harvard University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in politics from Princeton university.  A licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor, he spends his off-time teaching people to fly, and volunteering as a patient transport pilot for Angel Flight.
